My engine seems to be making a ticking noise, it's pretty loud and i'm worried about it. my old car had the same trouble and apperently it was the lifters being noisy. has anyone had problems like this before? and how do you fix it?

yea these things do that. Its very common. You can search for lifter tick at any of the boards around and you will come up with alot of stuff.
boils down to 3 things. You can buy new ones(updated) at about $10 each(16 of them). You can take yours out and clean/have them cleaned. and you can use synthetic oil. This doesn't always work, but for me it makes it alot less noticeable. Sometimes it is not there at all, sometimes it is only at start up for a few seconds and sometimes for a min or so.

I have this problem. If I remember correctly, 2G lifters are closer to $200-$225 for the set of 16.
I recently put Synthetic oil in the car and it has helped somewhat, but I still comes back every once an a while.

It most likely is lifter tick, but it could also be an exhaust leak. I had a cracked exhaust manifold, and the exhaust puffing out would cause a really loud tick tick tick. Once the car warmed up, the metal would expand, and the tick would almost go away completely.
Less likely, but something to check for.

Before you go replacing lifters try some good combustion chamber cleaner. The kind you spray in the TB and soak yer valves and pistons overnight. I have heard that the ticking can also be carbon related and the CCC should remove it. You will also be able to see if your mani has any cracks while using the CCC because it will smoke.

Be careful with syn oil. It has a tendancy to cause oil leaks in old engines as it cleans out gunk around old seals inside an engine.

yea good call George. If your old engine has been running on ex-dinosaurs, your best to keep it there.

I have been running Syn for 500 miles or so, no problems. Lifter tick gone, no leaks noticable. Engine has 116K Miles on it. Maybe time will tell, but who knows.

I've used synthetic for about 300 kms but unfortunatly my car still ticks like a diesel or something of the sort. Just so you know, synthetic doesn't always help

Hey guys, I guess I have the same problem with lifter tick, or at least I think so. See my oil level is always perfect so it would be a safe assumption that it is not my valves. My question is not replacing the lifters right away, will that cause damage to parts in the cylinder head?
Thanks!
