There was an old thread in regard to this topic and a few people I know are making something similar for their 1G and 2Gs...

Today I tried experimenting with cardboard to make the template of my air box.

I will probably run this for a while and see if there are any difference.  Then go on to make it out of tin or plastic depending which one is easier.

yeah basically like that, but you don't have to do the top piece. Just make the sides come up far enough that when the hood closes it seals the 'box'. Then if you really want to you can put a intake scoop in the hood Tongue (i'm half-kidding about that)

Yeah but I figured it kinda looked cool if it was all set up properly like an actual box  ~!!!

Something similar to this.  Although I think I shouldn't have made the top extend all the way so close to the headlight area.  If you look at the current picture, this guy intentionally left a gap to let cold air from the crack of the hood to blow into that box when driving.

also i'm betting an airbox like that has an air source, like a scoop from the bumper to the bottom of the airbox.

Actually our cars 1G and 2Gs have an air duct at the side of the inside fender that actually feeds air to that area.  Unfortunately its a useless design, when it isn't blocked off from the heat source around the engine.

But this box will actually work a lot better if you did make your own feeding source by cutting away at the bottom of the chassis.  I know Dan Dee is making something similar, but its going to be 100X better than mine, cause he did major plumbing work that better feeds cold air into the intake.

Nice stuff!

I made an airbox for my 1g and may I suggest for your permanant version use aluminum flashing (basically a roll of thin sheet aluminum) from home depot. It was 20$ for a roll that had way more than I needed and gave me room to make two versions. You could also double it up and insulate the middle layer with some cardboard as well.

having the filter down by the bumper is the best design imo. That box wont shield that significantly because the 4g63 produces alot of heat.

You'de be surprised. Even after a long hard drive my filter is still cold to the touch. Plus this way I don't have to worry about big puddles haha. That's mostly why I do it, my car tends to get dirty.

Putting it in the fender well would most likely result in a dead engine for me as the 4g63 isn't meant to burn mud.

very cool man!!  Save those cardboard patterns, because if its a perfect fit, others will be able to benefit from your brainwaves.

Pics of venting using stock entry. 5 inch duct.. Sorry I didn't get a pic with it installed yet.

My box is complicated because I'm installing a velocity stack(4 inch Vibrant) and custom air filter into the box...So at least some of the box will have to sealed.

Just wondering if widening the "snorkel" hole in the fender, engine bay side, would allow more air into the fabbed up airbox without weakening the frame/fender structure.

On my 2ga, I have a 1/2" vertical gap just below the air filter, between the radiator and the chassis.  Does your Eclipse have a gap too?  Perhaps, in addition to the fender hole and only when rolling forward, an airbox duct down to this area could let some cool air into to your setup.

Good post, I am considering this for my stock intake setup.

you can open up lots in that area

just cut thin sheet metal only, nothing that is thicker and stronger.
