motor was mixing oil and coolent, and then it was all leaking out some where behind the timing cover, from the head gasket im thinking, so i pull the head and find this.

the moter has ran for maybe 5 minutes with thoes spark plugs,

my plans where to just get this motor running and build a differnt motor some time in the fall.

It can be saved, but i'd tell you to start building a motor now.

once coolant and oil mix in the crank case, its usually just a matter of time till its knocking.

Change the oil and filter, run it for a few min and change it again.

Build a new engine and drive it till it quits or gets loud.

besides being cruddy from age, I don't see anything obviously wrong with the head or gasket.  Unless I am missing something?

yeah i had just never seen a motor with that much crap on it, even my old subaru with over 350,000kms on it didnt look that bad. you can see on the second cylinder from the timing side that it was leaking coolent. also looks that the top cylinder in the pic wasnt ever fireing, i'll have to investigate this...

i too a wire brush and brake clean to it, looks a little better now. head looks to be flat enuf still. tomorrow i'll order a cheep head gasket kit, and put'er all back to geather.

i used the long flat edge of my 12" caliper and some feeler gauges, .002 wouldnt go, but i could get the .0015 in a couple places. of course i cant check across the whole head at once, but less then .002 across 8ish" isnt bad.

what about re-using the head bolts?

Andrew, while you can, and in this case, because you will be replacing it when it goes knock, knock, rattle, rattle, SQUEAK!, its probably ok.

But, for those searching the forums, this is NOT a good idea.  New head bolts are cheap, hell even ARPS are only around a hun.

I have re-used 6 bolt head studs without a problem.  They are not torque to yield so technically yes, you can re-use them just like the rod nuts/studs as well.  But as john mentioned, new ones are not that exspensive... so it would be worth it to replace them just incase.  But if you are flat broke, have no way to make any money and you HAVE to have the car running properly by tomorrow, then i would re-use the head bolts as long as they are not stretched too much,

Im pretty sure 2G stuff is all torque to yield and you cant re-use those fasteners.
