1994 Eagle Talon Tsi AWD

Hey dsmers
Was working on my Fmic install when  I noticed the front motor mount was toast and ended up fixing that today.  Here is some info, with pictures.  Kinda starts after I pulled the mount off…

The rubber insert was squashed and the motor was practically resting on the crossmember.
Notice how the bolt isn't even the correct size? That's strange Huh


Bought a new bolt to fit the new poly bushing.  Huge difference!


Tried pressing out the old bushing...but that didn't work because it would just damage the mount bracket.


So...Enter 'reciprocating saw'
Of course you only cut thru the insert metal sleeve and not the mount bracket.  Next use a punch to slightly separate it from the bracket, then hammer it out over a vise.
   

Add grease to the poly bushing and press it into the mount bracket.  A large vise would work here also.


Now you’ll notice the new bolt is too big for the hole on the engine bracket…


So…simply drill it out slightly larger than the bolt.


Reinstall the new motor mount
To line the bushing up with the engine bracket to insert the new bolt, I was able to place a small piece of wood on the engine bracket, right beside the clutch slave cylinder, and use my floor jack to lift the engine up.  Some have suggested putting a jack under the oil pan to raise the motor, but I found it didn’t lift high enough, before lifting the whole car.  I also had to pry the engine bracket in the direction of the firewall to finish lining up the holes for the bolt.   The last picture is where I placed the prybar.  Of course, in these last few pictures I had already pushed the bolt thru the mount assembly.


Thought I’d post this to give members, perhaps ‘less mechanically inclined’, a heads up on this install.

I had the same thing happen when I did my 6 bolt swap, I noticed the bolt on the 2G was too small and the bolt hole was too. Drilled it out, but yea, then the vibrations got worse, lol

yeah mitsubishi has the smaller bolt like that to keep a bit of movment/slack i guess.
The rear mount is the same thing.

You'd think the smaller bolt thru the larger hole would cause the factory bushing to fail quicker.  Bad design Imo.
And yes, that's what I've been hearing too...extra motor vibrations from the poly bushing.  But it's still a good trade off to keep the engine stable when increasing hp. Cool  I think , lol.
Next I'll be replacing the driver side bushing...And the last two will wait untill my clutch job.

My motor mounts pressed out okay without issues..I don't recall having a sizing issue with the bolt.

oh i also found out.. the small size of the bolt doesnt matter.  When you tighten it all down the teeth on the end of the sleeve lock the bushing to the metal mount that is around it...  so it wont move...

If youre worried about the gap with the bolt just put a hose over the bolt. thats what I did.

Your bench press looks exactly like the one I used.
You don't need to cut inside to press it off.
Use round block small enough to fit inside the bracket.
Pressing on mostly the old rubber part the whole thing (including the steel circle) will press out.
All 4 mounts on my 1g were done that way

agreed...  if you have a press.....  you can just press out the old rings/bushings.

Mystery Solved with the smaller bolt...Thanks Brett, that makes sense.

And Daniel, It was the lower part of the press where the steel plates were slipping outwards, off the edge of the bracket...I could have just used a bar clamp to hold them but figured cutting the mount would eliminate any issues if it was even slightly rusted in there. And it only took a few minutes to do.  When I do replace the other mounts, I'll probably just press them Wink

Rubber hose around the bolt is another good idea too Jordan Smiley

And thanks to everyone with all their input...a definite help to those new in the 'dsm world'
