1999 Silver Eclipse GS-T

« on: July 31, 2010, 06:55:06 PM »

Started my car Friday morning, only to hear a thump. Sad

At first thought it my have been a cat or small rodent in my engine compartment.
Check everything out, nothing....so I backed out onto the road.....only to find out that I had no power steering.

Boy arm strong steering brings back great memories of my 70 roadrunner....... Cheesy

Back to the problem, I can't drive it like that so I pull it back into the driveway...open the hood
Everything looks good, can hear the ticking of the lifters.....but there is no belts moving.

All the belts are on their pulleys everything looks where it should but they ain't turning.

Car is running fine except for the faint brake light on and the bright servicing light.

Before the tour on Sunday my air conditioner was stuck in the on position, after the tour everything was back to normal.

Being a long weekend, no one is open except Canadian Tire and that ain't happening.

Any ideas....someone suggested that maybe one of the pulleys was vibrating and that is why the air conditioner got jammed.
They were suggested something about a key way? being worn, ....... HELP?

Good thing I still have my Tiburon and I didn't sell it yet.

Well I have to go transfer my insurance over, catch you later...... Loré

check the damper pulley. they are known to separate and would explain why the belts aren't turning.

+100 on that.  Thump it broke loose.  Then no pulleys are turning, so it has to be something that controls all the belts/pulleys.

Thanks everyone on your input, will have that little puppy purrring like a kitten.

Until then, the tiburon is running just fine.

Guy at the insurance place had to take a double take, seems like I transferred that insurance before, same plates took him by surprise.

Not too worry going to do it again once the eclipse is fixed.

Thinking of doing the timing belt at the same time, no one can remember when it was done. Car has 111,000 MILES on it at the moment.

oh, then do everything in there.

Tbelt, bbelt, water pump, tbelt tensioner and idler and tensioner pulley, bbelt tensioner, cam seals, crank seal, valve cover gasket, accessory drive belts too.

Also, this is the time to do cams. With the valve cover off and the timing belt off, cams are REALLY easy to swap.  I would suggest something mild but anything is an upgrade for stock 2g cams.  You will like it  Smiley

John thanks for the info

Transferred my insurance for the month, so that my son can have the car to do the upgrades

Any suggestions for the cams, what are good etc.

In the future the car will have a bigger turbo,  so what I do today I want to work tomorrow

Thanks for any input...

bigger turbo sure, but you want easy aircare, smooth idle and nice throttle response and mid range too right?

or are you gonna go nutzo?

I would love nutzo, but my hubby would have other ideas.

Let's say middle of the road.....power when you need it.
And a little extra to but some of those hondas to shame.

Actually I would love to keep up or beat my son and his VW-Audi project.

Just a thought, any input would be greatly appreciated.

I can tell you what to do with a 440 or 383 rear wheel drive muscle car but little engines and front wheel drive, whole new ball game.

Besides I bet many of you have already been down this road, and know what's good and what's not so good.

Hi  Loré,

I have a spare harmonic dampener that you can have for free.  I checked it out and the rubber does not seem to be separating from the steel hub.  Mind you it is from my 2g AWD and it has 116,000 Kms on it.

Anyway, if you do this yourself, then this can get you up and running quickly while you get some cash together for a T-Belt & etc. job.  You take off the driver side front wheel, the lower fender guard (3 bolts), hopefully the harmonic is not stuck on there too badly after you remove the the four of five bolts (try not to let the crankshaft spin as you wrench on the harmonic dampener's bolts).

Otherwise, Sylvia says the Tiburon is a nice car.
