So did an oil change the other day was at walmart and lordco but couldn't seem to find any 15w-40 Castrol Syntec/Edge. Only thing I could find was 15w-40 Royal Purple but at $13 per liter I can't really justify the price Tongue. So I ended up just getting my usual 10w-30... so where you guys getting this stuff?  Smiley

10w30 is fine, especially at your state of tune. When you get some more goodies on your engine you may want to but its fine for what you are doing.

Not even for the upcoming summer months?  Cool

matt, if your not like tracking your car under severe use (like road racing or such), or running 40 psi of boost and running 10's you dont need to run synthetic oil.  ALso with your engine and it having lots of km's on it synthetic oil will just burn and leak faster.

I also get my oil from walmart.  I would almost say that a 15w40 weight oil is a tad thick for those morning start ups...

I use the Castrol GTX 10w40 weight oil.... but there is also the walmat brand 10w40 but its only availible in 1 liter jugs...

oh and FWIW the $10 5 liter jug of "walmart" oil is the same performing oil as the $20 jug of "Castrol" or Penzoil" or whatever.  As long as they meet the API requirements (starburst certification) it will preform just as good.

But anyways...  I would personally run the 10w40 weight oil for the summer months  Esspecially if you go to the track and run the 1/4 mile or like spirted driving and hitting the boost.  It will keep its viscosity in the hot weather better then a 10w30 or 5w30..  Like i said its a Castol GTX at walmart and its always in stock when i go there.

Does rotella have a synthetic line?
I use their 15w-40 in the beemer, no synthetic though.
i get it from lordco, can tire, walmart.

here we go: http://www.shell.com/home/Framework?siteId=rotella-en&FC2=/rotella-en/html/iwgen/products/zzz_lhn.html&FC3=/rotella-en/html/iwgen/products/t6_detail.html

Should be able to get some of that t6, might actually be a viable substitute for your 15w-40.
They're stuff is typically for diesels, but the beemer has always run on it for the past 3 owners and it is 24 years old and sound as a pound.

Thanks for the info! However I have used synthetic oil since I've owned the car with no ill effects... are the benefits fairly minimal for the price you pay? Maybe next change I'll go with a 10w-40 for the summer months and back to 10w-30 for winter.

Hah!

I'm using Rotella in my bike right now... Performs just as good as specialty motorcycle oils, but is a quarter the price! Plus, it's common as hell.

If you want (yet another) option, lordco/can tire can get mobil 1 15-40 (BMW engines like it, stops the lifter tick they get during track days) in fact the usually have some in the large jugs. Not to bad, cost me about 100$ a change but thats because I needed 8 quarts T_T

after track days...i think all e30's tick to some extent. Mine does anyways, some people think its a diesel. Maybe I'll try some of this stuff. or i could adjust my valve lash, but who wants to do that when you can pour a bottle in the engine.

e36 M3, ticked after first track day, overfilled by 1/2 quart, doesn't tick anymore even after a run.
