So Ive bought a 1g trans and my output shaft comes all the way out. I also noticed that there was a little spring wrapped around the shaft (and it was toast)     Im going to replace all the seals on the trans and I just want to be sure Im installing it in "ok" running condition. I dont want to find out that there will be a major leak once the trans is installed.   Why is the shaft removable on the 1g, but not the 2g trans I have. Are there any members who know these transmissions well and can look at it for me and possibly fix any issues. There may be no issues at all, but its re-assurance before installing everything.  Im located in Surrey/Guildford.
Thanks boyce!

I have this happen on my 2g before. My trans output shaft going to transfer case was coming out. It turned out to be the ball in the viscous coupler pop out. The ball holds the output shaft from coming out. To do this, you have to remove the rear cover(the passenger side/right axle side). Just a heads up, be very careful on removing the rear cover as the gears for fifth or reverse(can't remember) will drop so make sure it's facing down(sitting on the bellhousing). Remember this is a 2g trans, i dunno if 1g trans are the same.

I hear the whole process takes about 15 min to fix. Smiley  Tho ive never removed the viscous coupler..    Turns out the spring is from the outer perimeter of the output shaft seal. (which im replacing)

Let me know if u need a hand. As far as i remember, i think the viscous coupler is held by a snap ring then it just pulls out. The output shaft has a hole at the end where you insert the ball then the viscous coupler locks the ball from popping out. I think took me an hour as i did it in the car.

The vc is simPle to take out like he said.  Just pop the cover off and then pull the snap ring. Beware though it's a crazy little bastard and goes flying sometimes.

If you have trouble finding one I can dig around to see if I can find mine and mail it to you. No guarantees that I will be able to find since I moved this summer though.

I have the ball sitting here on a magnet tool. I wasn't sure where to store it when I took it out a year and a half ago and figured it be safe there. Whats your shipping info??
