HELP!!! Serious engine problems
« on: September 07, 2005, 08:04:07 pm »
Hey guys heres the story. I was driving my 1999 eclipse gs the other day down in the states and my engine just died, so i pull over and pop the hood and anit freeze is pissing out everywhere. I brought it to my trusty mechanic and this is the list of shit that needs to be fixed.

water pump quit...
caused timing belt to bust...
cam shaft screws up...
valves broke...
and they arent done checking it out yet.

does anybody know what else i have to check if the timing belt goes :?:

heres the silver lining
i want to do a bunch of after market work while the engine is screwed up.  so does anybody know what i can do to make this eclipse go faster? i want this bad boy to move once its all put together, but im not sure if i can afford to put turbo in it. but im all for your opinions, tips, and which parts will work is much appreciated. thanks. remember its for a 99 gs

You can install Turbo on your GS but it's still will be way slower than factory stock Turbo Eclipse/Talon

To put it simple GS can't be fast unless you comparing it to the civic or something.

Since you are needing a full rebuild (you do)

The only option for me to suggest would be to swap in a JDM turbo motor.

the turbo motor swap isnt practical in the least in a 2g.

Sell it or find a real steep hill tto race down.

In the end, putting money into a GS will get you know where. Put the engine back together in running order and sell it. Buy a nice TURBO talon or eclipse! running a non turbo is like boning an ugly chick, it's easy but not very rewarding, a turbo is like boning a hot chick, more work, but much more fun....and bragging rights!

Drop in one of these suckers and slap on a 20G turbo + AEM EMS and you will fly...

Or get these rebuild kits and rebuild away..

http://www.howellautomotive.com/Howell/Store/catalog/catalog/default.php?cPath=142_38_174

You really only need to strengthen the bottom end and get a used DOHC head.

If you get a 2G TSI and it crankwalks, you'll end up needing a new engine anyways...

Unless AWD is what you want, that's a totally different story.

Fixing just to sell is often not in your best money usage interest, even if it does seems like a waste to loose so much on a running car.  I'd weigh your options carefully, unfortunatly neither one is ideal.
