[2g] ignition coil new/rebuilt issue
« on: January 03, 2006, 07:17:33 pm »
i bought a new wire set some months ago; i thought it fixed the misfire and that the 5 yr old wires were just worn out.  deja vu, now i'm getting the misfire at 10psi again.

could the wires be getting killed?
my check engine light has been on a few months but since it was an EGT code i thought it was harmless (maybe not?)

thanks!

ps. dunno if it's related, but another issue i have is a slight shaking whenever i medium accel (this shake never happened when i had the bad wire/misfire issue last yr, so maybe the cause is something else -that's why i made a separate prior post on that)

What wires are you running?  I've seen the least problems with NGK wires and they seem to hold up quite well.  They don't look as "cool" as other more ricey looking wires, but they seem to work well.

How do you have them routed if you route them straight rather than a twisted jumble you will help eleminate electro effects that will lead to arcing and wire deterioration.

What about your plugs?  How often are they changed?  How about their gap?

Their layout is somewhat parallel; bit of crossover near the spark plugs.

New plat plugs replaced old plat plugs a few months ago and were gapped by me.

Try ditching those platinum plugs and try some regualr NGK BPR7ES or BPR6ES fixes your problems.  Even the BPR7EKN and BPR6EKN are fine.

I have heard of Platinum plugs causing misfire problems for some DSMs.  Some people seem to like them, and others seem to have problems.

Found out the wires are ok (resistance was actually at the better end of the spec range in manual).

Coil resistance is beyond spec range, so hopefully a new coil is all I need.

Took my ohmmeter to lordco and asked for an ignition coil.  It had HIGHER resistance (2k ohms more) than the ones in my car!  Does that make any sense?

I didn’t buy it since it’s way out of spec range.  What to do next?
Pricy item so I definitely want to avoid dealer.  thanks
