16G go "Bye-bye"
« on: February 11, 2010, 01:05:28 am »
So just this Sunday, while driving home at night. I was leaving from a buddy's place. I brought up the RPM and slipped the clutch as usual to drive off. We heard a POP noise and shitloads of smoke puked out through the exhaust and some from the under-hood of the car.
Hadn't wrapped my head around what exactly it was, but I had a massive feeling it was turbo related. My initial thoughts were coolant. The smoke has and oily smell however sweet as well. Head gasket? Not likely. The engine itself idled perfectly. Started up fine. Didn't overheat.

Anyway, the car's back in the damn garage again. In pieces, again. I pulled the turbo off tonight and as I suspected, it was the turbo. It was oil. Enjoy what comes next...
01 - Turbine side

02 - Turbine wheel? Wait.. what wheel? It's fucking gone!

03 - Waste gate drenched in oil.

04 - Compressor wheel chip. Very nice... /sarcasm.. or maybe not.

05 - O2 Sensor.. or whatever was left of the probe.

06 - Nasty nicks in the O2 housing. The turbine wheel definitely went through here.

As you can see... The whole turbo fucked itself.. I'm going to call ADP, the company I had rebuild the turbo last year in Vancouver and see what they're going to say or do about this.
I'm sure the wheel or whatever's left of it is hiding in my exhaust along with the other 4.8L of oil. I'm not bothered to take it out as it should in theory only go one way.

Yeah.. So.. I'm really happy with my DSM right now. //sarcasm for real this time.

Shitty deal, Maurits.

At least you don't have bits of compressor wheel scattered throughout your motor.
Objects in mirrors appear to be losing.

Well, look at the bright side like Cam said, a turbo failure in the best possible direction, out the exhaust... I know dsm's still rule the awd bang for buck world, but man stuff like this is putting a wet towel on my enthusiasm for getting back into one  :-\   I feel your pain..

It's still under warranty. It was rebuilt May last year.
Back to Vancouver it goes. We'll see if it gets covered. I can't send them the wheel since it's somewhere in my exhaust. I'm not about to go hunting for it.

There's a chip out of the compressor wheel, take a look at the pic.

Should be able to use it again. Rebuilt it with a a new center section. Sell it on Revscene as a "clipped" turbo  ;)

Shitty deal any word on warranty?

Or get it back from warranty and sell it for more money as a rebuilt turbo ;)

No not yet. I just got the shit out of my exhaust and going to send it to them on Monday.

Uh.. Zach.. It's out already

And it didn't shoot out.. I sort of had to fish for it in the exhaust. Well not really. try lifting a 1 piece exhaust from downpipe back vertically to get that shit out.. Yeah it was fun.
