Anyone hoist an engine out?
« on: November 03, 2002, 10:05:44 pm »
I picked up a brand new engine hoist (2ton) for $200.  :uzi:

It'll be a few months before I'll put it to use....

So I've been doing research on pulling the engine, and from what I gather, most people take out the engine with the tranny attached to the engine.

I read somewhere in a thread that you could leave the tranny in the car if the cylinder head was off.  I guess there would be more room in that case.

Anyway,  I would be interested if anyone here who has done an engine removal could share any information or helpful hints.

I prefer to do it without the tranny attached. It gives you more room to pull it and it makes things way easier.....
Also when reinstalling I prefer without tranny. It can be done but I think that's with a couple of people.
Smaller is easier to handle when you're by yourself.

Thanks for the reply, Ryan.   The DSM shop manual says to take out the tranny first.  The Haynes manual says to take it out all together.

I was thinking it would be easier to take it out all at once because:

1.  I don't have a tranny jack.  :(
2.  I hate working underneath the car.    :x
3.  I can probably get some poor sucker to help me.  ;)

But then, as you say, by taking it all together, it may be difficult to control the  "ascent"  from the engine bay.

The tranny is only 110ish lbs. you should be able to remove it by bench pressing it onto your chest then weasel yourself out from underneath it and drag it out from under the car.

I don't have a tranny jack myself I found 2 people for reinstallation works fine, or in my case the 2 ton hoist helps lift my 200lb tranny into place. Keep in mind you could always use your hoist to remove the tranny also. (side note)
Lowell lifts them in and out all by himself)

I think the factory installs the whole front assembly into the body from underneath. IF you think about it just the upper strut mounts, wiring, brakelines, subframe bolts and crossmember bolts, hoses, downpipe, and driveshaft would need to be removed which in theory would only take about 45 min to disconnect however you now need the body higher than the valve cover to clear.

Buy yourself a 50dollar load leveller its a hand cranked dealie that hangs off the hoist so you can set the angle the engine hangs at. You'll need to have the tranny angled down quite a bit to pull it up between the frame rails. Removing the hood is highy recommended if you're going to try the "one piece pull"

Boy, that  sounds easy!

Ryan, remember:  I'm a skinny little wimp,  I can't bench 110.
I'll see if I can find a load leveler.  (So thats what that thing is called.....)

Hey Chris,
I dropped my transmission before pulling my engine, and it's not really that difficult.  I had a hand doing it mind you I just put a hydraulic jack under it, and had someone pull the jack back at the same rate as I slid the tranny away from the engine, then had them lower the jack slowly as I kept the transmission balanced on it from above... then I only had to slide it from under the car and move it out of the way.  The only drawback to this method is if you slip and drop the transmission.. it would suck (keep feet, fingers, and small animals from under the transmission).
