New Clutch Break-In Period
« on: November 28, 2002, 02:12:49 pm »
I just got a CFDF installed and want to know what I should and should not do during the Break-In period.  I have searched for some answers and came up with simply stay off of the boost.

My problem is that I have to climb SFU everyday, so cruising at 2500 - 3000 RPM is not the easiest this to do.

I read somewhere that once the clutch is engaged, it doesn't matter if you are at 2K or 6K, The break in period only refers to the way that you engaged the clutch. (I.e.  No 5K dumps, etc)  But I can not find this on a site that I would trust.

That’s where you guys come in.  What do you think?  What do you think is the correct way to break in a clutch?

I think just stay away from harsh engagements, once its engaged, its engaged, but dont go to like 5.5K and shift, I say shift around 4K.  But dont quote me on this.

That was my thought.  Once it is engaged, there should be no problem.  I agree with the earlier shifting

Off the Boost or off the RPM?  This is where i think my confusion is.  I under stand that i should not try to launch the car from a stop.  I also understand that i should try not to accelerate at a high rate of speed.  But what i and trying to figure out is, if there is a problem cruising at 3K+, especially on the highway.

My mind wants to say that there should not be a problem as the clutch has not engaged, nor are you on the Boost.

But I don't know.

I say change gears early and try and stay off boost as much as possible, it may be a good idea to turn down the boost on the MBC, if you think about it, that clutch is getting mad torque on it when accelerating at the rate we can, so big boost might slip it and can kill it.  Turn down the boost and try and take it easy.  Break it in, not break it.  Its not hard to take it easy, save yourself some gas to =)

This should help you big time. My CFDF got toasted in about 4 months because of not being broken in right. Obviously do not launch your car for first 1K kms or so the next thing is do not redline and shift or even do crazy boosting. RPM's or boost don't matter we are talkin about your cars power. Meaning some boost is fine and 5000 rpms with gradual boost (slow ) boost build up is fine just don't use all of your cars power and have a blast when its broken in.

My advice would be to stay off the boost.  RPM shouldn't be hard on it as long as you're shifting softly when you shift.  Cruising at 3k+ shouldn't be an issue just don't go from cruise to WOT @ 3k RPM because that'll build boost and torque in a hurry and then it could get the clutch slipping even though it's fully engaged.

When I broke in my CFDF I just went easy on the gas and shifted smooth and easy for a couple tanks of gas.

I have a CFDF, it was installed correctly, broken in for 200KM then taken to mission for abuse, just make sure you have LOTS of cool down time between launches. (disclaimer)...dont do this to your Talon. It holds 20psi and runs 12s no issues :)

Thanks for all of the replys.  It is nice to know that some people actually had their CFDF last longer than 6 months.  So far I have put on about 100 Miles.  (American Car)  Hopefully I have have it broken in before the Dec meet.

Probably not though.  The staying of the boost is killing me.   :D
