Gm 5.7 issue.
« on: April 09, 2015, 08:06:45 pm »
Ok my daily driving out here in butt fuck no where Saskatchewan is acting up.

94 Gm 5.7, it will start run nicely then out of no where or when it's cold almost shut off like rpm drops from 2200 to 1500 to 1800 jumping back and forth then back fire and run fine for a wile normaly and do it again. I did the plugs wires cap and rotor and now it just does it smoother.

At a loss. Any ideas?

did they fix it?  it could be a number of things, but two come to my mind.

it could be a fuel system related problem.  Those years could come with a certain type of port injection that isn't really port injection.  it has a "spider" system of plastic tubes in the intake manifold runners with plastic injectors.  Often times the fuel pressure regulator fails and leaks. The leak dumps raw fuel down the intake manifold.  The "spiders" themselves often just plain fail as well, as its a really crappy system.

the other thing to look at is the timing chain or distributor drive gear.  If you are getting backfires and intermittent lacks of performance, the timing can be jumping around.  If the distributor drive gear is worn off, this will  happen.  If the timing chain is stretched, and/or the chain guides (or other parts) are worn, this will also happen.
