lights out need help.

So my tail lights and dash lights are all out but work when brake peddal is pressed only?

Obviously power is getting to the dash and taillights when the brake pedal is pressed so I assume you have a blown fuse on the lighting circuit caused by wires in contact with each other (ie. brake light circuit) so now when the brakes are pressed power flows into the open circuit and energizes it.

Trace your wires back from the brake pedal or taillights and look for melted or worn wires.

After that I would look into any common relays and switches that the two circuits have in common.
