Wheel Vibration
« on: October 23, 2002, 01:32:01 pm »
Ok, This is driving me up the wall.  :x    Here is the situation.

At mid - high speed, (60 - 120+ km/h) my steering wheel vibrates.  Not alot but noticable.  I have had all of the wheels balanced, twice in fact, I have had a 4 wheel alighment, hell I even through on my 2 set of rims and tires and the vibration is still there.

The only things I can think of are that the rotors a warped but it does not get worse if I use the brakes or maybe the driveshaft or something in the drivetrain is bent or out of balance.

Any ideas?  :?

I got the same thing, it comes in around 100km and leaves about 120km i think.  It is not that bad though.  But i have also experience this with many other cars, so it might just be the cars, or maybe the AM rims, if you got some on.

I am running stock rims right now.  Hopefully when I buy new rims in the New Year this will go away.

Make sure the lug nuts are torqued properly, that can cause alot of vibration. How old are your front struts? These items could be the cause.

Vibration is there no matter which tires are on the car.  (I have 2 sets of rims and tires)

Lug nuts are torqued to 130 ft/lbs always.  Frount struts are less than 3 months old.

I will check the braking system this weekend.  (Calipers and rotors)

130lb/ft seems kinda high.. I haven't actually checked the range in the manual though. I usually torque my wheels to 90lb/ft

You might try filling the driveshaft supports with silicone to remove unwanted driveshaft movement, another possible source of vibration

Isn't 130 too high?
I usually torque it to about 85-90 ft lb.

I swear that the manual stated 120 - 140.  I will have to check.

Could this be the problem?

I got bored at work so I went and checked.

120 - 140 Nm
85 - 100 ft.lbs

I guess will have to change this.  Oops..

If it is independent of which wheels are being used, and it applying the brakes doesn't seem to affect it, it would most likely be as a result of drivetrain imbalance.  Maybe bent drive shaft etc...

Is it stronger at a certain RPM, or is it more speed dependent?

It seems to be speed dependant.  However it is less noticeable under hard acceleration.  But it is still there.

I have the same problem it just began occuring to me about a month ago. Never had this prob before, tires are fine as is alignment. My brakes are completely gone in the front and am under the impression my front passenger side caliper is fried. I get the vibration at 105 -115 km/h then it disappears.  Gettin my brakes done real soon I'll let u know if it removes the prob.
