I have a 94 eclipse 1.8l(i know, gutless, but i am broke, trying to save up for a 4G63 turbo engine) and there is a ticking sound coming from the engine. I took it to the mechanic and he said that it was one of my belts, he changed them, ticking still there. I have no idea what this could be. It comes and goes and when i rev it the ticking goes with the rev(more rapidly) until it stops...
Any ideas guys would be much appeciated cuz this freakin lawn mower sound is drivin me nuts

go to vfaq.com and search tick noise and pick the first link.

Sounds like the common lifter tick problem.

Its not really a problem...most dsm's get it....mine came and went....had it bad for week and then did an oil change and it was gone. If you really want to do it, its a thing most people can do themselves....i think new lifters are about 100.

i was busy, so i didnt even bother to look up what it was even though i should have. The mechanic didnt charge me that much an i got a tune up at the same time an it was less than 125 so it wasnt that bad. He's just an idiot and doesnt know what he's doing. Thanks guys

Ya the number one lesson i have learnt since owning a dsm and being on this forum is always ask/search if something is wrong with you car before you get anything done. And NEVER EVER go to places like ok tire....even though they should be relaible they almost toasted my car once.

will the 1.8 SOHC use the same lifters as the DOHC 4g63?

upside is it should be easy to do compared to the twincam

the 1.8l talon motor is a G37B series motor if i remember correctly, and is the big brother to my G32BT (1.6) Both sohc head design, mine does not have automtic lash adjusters, (lifters that are supposed to adjust themselves) so i would not be suprised if yours is the same, research some more, you might only need a valve adjustment.

Don't save for a 4G63 engine, save for a 4G63 equipped 1G talon TSi. It will cost about the same

I agree with Andrew on this one. It's easier and probably not much a different of cost, if you sold your car and bought a TSI...

Not only will you have the turbo but also enjoy AWD! If your concerned about performance and features, AWD would best suit you.

Also because you have AWD you will be able to better take cars off the line that are within the same performance specs as you.

As for experience, i had a N/T 98 Eclipse and sold it for my 97 GSX. All I have to say is that i'm not only glad i sold my car to go Turbo but also that I chose AWD over the GS-T FWD.
