Tranny Tech-Bearing pre-loads and shims?
« on: April 07, 2004, 03:27:28 am »
Long story short......Im swapping my messed up rear tranny case with another case. Iam goin to be using the input and intermediate shaft out of the new case( the diff and bellhousing are beyond repair on the new case) I know I can check for slop in the bearings for the diff by pushing on it while the case halfs are together but how do I know if the input and intermediate shafts have the right endplay? Or do I need to worry about it at all, meaning that the cases should be exactly the same size? I dont plan on changing out any of the bearings but I will if I have to. The need for shims to eliminate the endplay and preloads shouldnt be a problem if Im not replacing bearings, correct?

On another note."holy shit I cant believe Im messin with trannies now"

I can't offer any advice.

I've always done better with electrons than gears.

But good luck anyways.

Turns out that the bearing races need to be shimmed. Using solder to measure the difference.
