Doughnuts
« on: February 08, 2012, 10:59:42 pm »
AWD'n in the little bit of snow we got down here was a blast! Have been reading for a few years but just recently found this club. Glad to know there is still a bunch of real mechanics out here. I'd like to say I'm almost done after my 6 bolt swap but you all know these cars are never done!  ;D  Excited for the next meet.

Welcome to BC DSM Matt!

BTW: It's rumoured that a certain BC DSM member likes doughnuts.  However, it's all hearsay.

I have a Jacks Trans (EVO III 1st gear, taller 5th gear, double Synchro 1st, 2x Synchro 2nd, 2x Synchro 3rd, 4  Spider Gear, Dual Torrington & Quaife FWD).

Had a warranty issue in the first 10 months (car was off the road for a month while the trans visited Colorado for first gear whine, intermediate shaft bearings).  Jacks checked for bearing pieces and found the bad bearings held together.  Bearings pieces did not damage anything else I was told.  Jack's felt bad about that bad batch of Mitsu intermediate shaft bearings and clear coated the trans for me at no $$.  They also shipped the trans back via courier on their own coin.

Ten months after the warranty work, the trans grinds going into second gear (that's why I got it rebuilt the first time).  It's out of warranty with a guesstimated <20,000 Kms.  I haven't sent it back even though Jacks has offered to look at it, but at a cost.

The Talon was used as a daily driver.  It used to have a dual-plate clutch.  I didn't race it.  I used the Jacks recommended gear lube.  When the trans was newly rebuilt with the dual-plate, I could wind it out and never miss a shift.

If I had to do this again, I would consider a local shop.  This way warranty issues also cover dropping the trans.  I don't have the space (in a condo) to do this repair/car storage, so I pay a dealer to drop the trans and store the Talon.  I also pay a courier/customs shipping company.

If you can drop the trans on your own, then you're better off than I was!  Good luck and keep us posted.  :)

Sorry to hear that Tony. I sure hope they have it all figured out by now. Maybe I might have a spare tranny if u want to rebuild it.

I was just making crop circles in the high school parking lot and a teacher came out and yelled at me :( lol since our awd's like snow so much I felt obligated to help old lady's push their cars out though, I may have been interrupting class but at least those kids got the chance to see our wonderful cars in action. Maybe one day they will be the ones helping old lady's.
