Title: 12.5 with minimal mods!
Post by: Jared Clark on May 27, 2004, 03:30:52 am
Im sure many people have read this as its kinda old news by now but I thought it would be cool to post up as I just came across it again.

This guy from DSMTalk.com (JayHass) put out some impressive numbers on his fairly stock 1990 AWD Eclipse.

Mods:
3" Turbo back
Aircan removed w/ K&N
Turbo XS Boost contoller
Removed upper and lower honeycomb in MAS
Removed some weight (Not gutted by any means...still has interior panels and all)
My own brand of tweaks and tuning.

So basically exhaust, filter and boost.

The rest of the car is STOCK. No no I mean *REALLY* stock.

NO port work
NO synthetics
NO Dump Mod
Stock O2 Housing
Stock clutch

He also had Sunoco 116 Oct fuel

First run 12.7@107mph running 17psi in first and second, creep to 20psi in third and fourth.

Rest of the runs 20psi all the way through

His other runs:

12.52@109.2mph

60: 1.71
330: 5.15
1/8: 7.99
MPH: 88.10
1000: 10.45
1/4: 12.52
MPH: 109.20

Backed up with

60: 1.67
330: 5.16
1/8: 7.99
MPH: 88.86
1000: 10.46
1/4: 12.53
MPH: 108.5
(Had some hesitation in the top gears as you can see in the 1/8 was stronger than the first run. Damn it!)

There were video's posted and I had them on my computer but since this was quite awhile ago the links are broken.

Quite impressive to say the least, also shows the great potential for our cars :D

I read that thread over and over

I guess leaded 116 Octane makes a huge diference, I wonder what he would run on 94 Octane with 17PSI.

Thats some ringer of a TEL. I ran the NUTS off my 90 AWD in a similar state of mods and the best I ever got was 13.3@107 with the stock turbo unported everything stock stock stock but a cat back 3"...ran gas is key tho.

Ah yes, the legend of JayHass.

My own brand of tweaks and tuning

Hmmm....anyone remember Al Blaha? He had left the DSM scene by the time I gained any interest, but he ran some very impressive numbers with very minimal mods. However, he used all sort of "tweaks", such as hacking his mas so extremely that he needed a flapper in it to let it idle properly, and putting a resistor in-line with the mas temp sensor to fool the ecu into seeing lower intake temps. Enough tweaks and amateur tuning, and mid-12s isn't quite so surprising. Still, VERY impressive.

Ask Fraser about Flapper doors. :P

The problem with these "incredible ET's" is that who can really verify the mods he's listed.  Anybody inspect his car?

For example, he could in fact have "sleeper" 16G which looks exactly like a 14b, etc.

Stock clutch?  Possible, but not for long.  Alarm bells are ringing on that one.

I don't doubt the times, but whenever anybody has an unusually strong time given the mods,  I'd be skeptical.  I'd bet money that we don't have the whole story......

I've often thought it'd be fun to build a super sleeper.  Something that's sleeper outside and under the hood.

Use about a 92 Laser AWD with no options, real plain looking, hubcaps or some ugly alloys would be better.

Then for power you could do a quiet Supra pump, any injectors, nt regulator, a key diver chip isn't visible at all and would keep the car running right.  Sleeper 16g, ported 2g mani, ported o2 housing, there's a few places to hide a MBC or EBC.  If you spent the time you could probably hide 2.5" piping inside the factory heatshields and go straight thru the factory cat.  IC piping would be hard to hide so ya might have to live with stock... You make it pretty fast though and look totally stock... plus nobody can see what's inside so that opens the door to fancy valve jobs, cams, and pistons.

Mike, every single person who looks under my hood who is NOT affiliated with DSMs in any way ( 99% of the population) says...

"hmm, pretty stock huh?"

 :?

Rethink your effort level for a sleeper effect  :P

But when it comes to tech at the track, once they know you're fast, those redneck tech guys are all over you, even if they don't know what the hell they are looking at.......

When I tech'd last time the guy didn't say a word to me, walked around the car a couple times, looked in the wheels and inside and everything then signed my card and handed it back... ?   :?

Better than getting hassled I guess but still... awkward.

And Fraser, it's more fun to fool the guy's who know something tho.  I can usually pick out a sleeper, like when it's a borig stock looking car but there's 2 guages up on the a pillar.... well... even if you can't see the type of guages you count on that setup being worth $300 or more so there's obviously something going on under the hood.

You also have to wonder about the weight of these cars too. I remember reading about 2700lb AWD. A lot of the time, you don't hear the full story as they only list engine mods.

My car is a sleeper up until it hits 3PSI and WG opens up :D

BTW the dirtier the car the more sleepier it looks

Hey Mike.

I know a guy that has gauges on the pillar and the car is slow ;) Also > not even hooked up yet   Sleeper? or sleeping  :P

no doubt Jay Haas knows his shit, but I think there are 2 things we might be missing in addition to what the rest said.

1.  No lift shift.  think about the time it takes to shift 3 times, also noting how your boost is all lost each and every time you lift.

2.  fully built tranny, rear end, and other drivetrain parts?  Stock clutch, but maybe the rest was slick, smooth and strong?

Thanks to Forced Performance my engine bay looks stock as well  ;D

LOL, yea, I saw this notification come up!

big thing on those older fast low mods cars are high octane fuel.  you can run high boost easily on that and keep timing in it.

20 psi is 20 psi as long as enough air can flow.

and then Jared moved on  to 240's and claimed he would drive one for ever.
