UBCSCC AutoX school
« on: September 28, 2008, 06:02:16 pm »
so we went out to this on the weekend.  GREAT fun had, learned alot, nice bunch of people all around.

We did 2 officially timed runs in the morning, then we did G circle drills, both ways, many laps, followed by sweeper drills both directions also quite a few passes.  Lunch.

Then offset gates, with lots of passes, then slalom, again, quite a few passes.

you could have an instructor ride with you or drive your car, or just watch and critique.  Many qualified instructors out there too, so it was really good.

Then we did 5 passes on the full course to see who was hot and how much we improved.

33 cars out, by far most of them were way more car than my non turbo 3300+ lb 91 Galant.  Suby STi's on slicks, built 400 hp Golf on R comps, late model (or close to it) M cars, Porsches, S2k, etc.  I would say I had the 3rd or 4th worst car there, maybe even 2nd worst car there.  On paper anyways.

I finished 14th overall, 7th on index and I won my class!!  (H stock).  Best competition from that class came from an 08 Acura CSX and a Civic SIr.

My lowly family hauler/daily driver bested an STi, a Cooper S, an RX8, a modified MazdaSpeed Miata(X2) and some other noteworthy hardware.

Can't wait for 201  :)

That's awesome!  Even beating an rx8, i thought those were supposed to be great handling cars.  I guess the driver was pretty poor, or 500lbs overweight  :D  Wish i had been able to be there..  :'(

because it was a school and a more capable car can mask problems.  I wanted to learn.  Skinny tires and no power make for a better driver in the end.

Many cars there had R compound rubber and all but one car there had more power than me, 90% significantly more than me.  I have 195/65/15 Hydroedge tires that are about 3 years old.

Tires are evil, after all. They must be punished accordingly.

VMSC Driver Training is this weekend. I'm gonna go see how much Azenis and Brake Pad I can use in a day. Mabye if I toast the brakes good enough it'll give me a valid excuse to look for some big brakes on the front (Even though my whole, admittedly stock, setup is only a year a half old. Including calipers.).
Objects in mirrors appear to be losing.

Kevin. Talk to Paul Whitworth if you want to participate. I know there were spots open. Class is Thursday-Friday at 7:30pm.

You're technically past the deadline, but if you ask nicely he'll let you in.
