Title: Racing Greed portwork (1g head)
Post by: Jordan Kruger on January 01, 2013, 10:50:40 am
Well its really coming together.  Lowell has made some serious progress on my 1g cylinder head and it looks like its going to flow extremely well.
All the valve seat transitions have been smoothed and the ports are all knife edged (including exhaust ports)
He even went to the extent of smoothing the intake side of the cylinder bowls where detonation usually occurs.

Kevins cylinder head recently went through the same process and also turned out extremely nice.

There is still miles of material you could remove from the walls. Are you just going for a smoother surface? You should see the Slowboy one. They hog those son bitches out to a thin wall and port match the gasket.

I didnt want to over-do it. Ive previously had a ported head crack on me and it was ported to the max.

My objective was to clean up any casting inperfections (water journals, oil passages etc) ,clean up the walls in each port,  knife edge the dividers in all ports, and get rid of the casting lip on the back of each valve seat.

theres also lots of evidence that just minor cleaning up is plenty and that going too far is detrimental.  just because it can be done all huge and stuff, and it looks super trick doesn't mean it should be.

There are some great porting experts out there.
This video is great for learning how to port a dsm head.  The head is a 2g head but all the same rules apply to a 1g head.

Check it out.
The whole video is very informative.
Including the part at 4:40.

Ide love to spend the time to polish the entire cylinder head.   It looks so nice.
Its unfortunate it takes so much time and you need to do it all before you clean and assemble the cylinder head.  Otherwise Ide do it!

But its time I get my damn car running. lol

Well I picked up the head from Racing Greed.  Lowell did an amazing job porting the head. The valve bowls are very smooth and he even went to the extent of cleaning up all the casting flashing everywhere on the head.  He also smoothed the edge between the intake valves in the cylinder bowls to fight detonation.
Their machine shop installed new brass guides and SS valves. And I had RG install my dual Si valve springs.
Im going to throw the head on my block today and drop in the Fp4r cams.
This thing is going to make good power.

Nice polish.  Looks like Lowell put in some extra zing.  450 isnt enough power for this much effort. Turn it up to 11! ;D
