Alienware Aurora Desktop (not a DSM I know)
« on: November 04, 2010, 10:26:49 am »
I figure I would give a review on this in case anyone is in the market for a serious desktop.

I bought this desktop for mostly the 3D CAD work I do for engineering purposes and some gaming here and there. Really the only game I play is when I do find time is Battlefield Bad Company 2.

My old computer was custom built 7 years ago by me and cost e $3000 and lasted a hell of a long time. I wanted to build something from scratch again, but I honestly do not have the time or patience when my old computer shit the bed. So I custom ordered a Alienware from DELL and it was honestly the best decision I have ever made. I use my computer everyday for school and pleasure purposes. Mostly school though. The time this thing will save me is worth it alone.

Overall build.....

Intel i7 930 Quad Core 2.8GHz. Can overclock to 3.3GHz.
12GB Tri-Channel Memory 1333MHz
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
Nvidea GTX 480 1.5Gb Single slot Video Card
Creative Titanium Sound Card
Wireless Internet Card
2x500GB Raid 0 7200rpm hard drives
875W Power supply
Liquid Cooled CPU with Radiator
Blue Ray Optical Dive. Burn Read DVD, Read Blue Ray
19 in 1 Card Reader
21.5" HD 1920x1080 2ms Alienware Monitor
Logitech G700 Mouse

Price tag  $3000 plus tax

Performance wise......

This computer is blazing fast. You can't make this thing choke if you tried. Run full virus scan, iTunes, multiple torrent downloads, and games or CAD at the same time and this thing MAYBE is loaded to 20% (memory wise and 8% CPU. This is when not overclocked.

Temps are maintained at 26 deg C and the liquid cooling makes it super quiet.

The nicest thing about the whole setup is the case. No screwdrivers required. Everything is "snap in place." Even when you want to add hard drives later (im thinking solid state drives later on). Lots of USB connections, and the whole case lights up inside when you are working on it.... even when the power is disconnected.

Best purchase I have ever made since my first computer 7 years ago.

I priced all the components separately and came up to $2300 not including shipping. The extra $700 gets me an awesome warranty, sick case, saved time of assembly and paying for shipping and waiting....   with LOTS of room for expansion later.

PS...    This thing supports 3D monitors...

Agreed Shane The plan is on sporting dual monitors in Jan. Two of 21.5" will take up enough desktop space.

Let me know if you plan on buying any other parts or anything. I have a couple wholesale accounts (I build computers on the side) and I'd be more than happy to give you the BCDSM deal (my cost).

Alienware is one of the few companies I would buy a pre built computer from.  Yes I know its owned by Dell.  Aston Martin is/was owned by Ford, but I'd still hit several of thier cars over a Taurus.
91 Eagle Talon TSi 5spd awd.  GT-12, TriFlow Cams, 850s, Tial, JIC, Jackal, sticky rubber.
86 Merkur XR4Ti 5spd, rwd, turbo, 91,381km.  Original paint, heated leather. intercooled, big VAM, Full 3" exhaust, Cossie sway bar, 16" tires.
06 Mazdaspeed6 6spd awd, DISI turbo, heated leather HIDs, Corksport, Cobb, Konig, Centric...
2018 VW Golf Alltrack turbo Tornado Red, 6mt, some free mods
