Electronic Mufflers

Anybody know anybody has one installed..
I think I heard one in a NSX at RG last year.

I would really like to drive my car more instead of triggering everybody's car alarm while I drive.

why not just get a electric cutout?

For ripping or race mode have it open so it dumps the exhuast shortly after the turbo....  then with the push of a button you can re-route the exhuast into the "quiet" exhuast system you have.

+1 on Bretts post.  I will be doing this on the Mazda.  Cobb or Corksport 3" downpipe with cat, then 3" cutout, then to stock exhaust.  Cutout triggered by boost pressure and RPM.

There are several of these systems as factory issue now.

The one most seem to forget is our own cousin, the 3Si.
http://www.3si.org/wiki/index.php/Image:ActiveExhaustDiagram.jpg

I'd simply go with a better muffler, add a resonator and a cat. Failing that, definitely consider a cutout with the block running through a stockish muffler and 2" pipe or something similar.

I thought of putting one of these on my car earlier this year, but poses a problem for those running Speed Density.
It would require two separate tunes on your emulator which is no problem, but everytime you want to switch muffler on or off, you have to pull over and upload the correct VE map from your laptop...Unless you have a passenger doing it for you on-the-fly.  However, good if you just want to switch it open at the track and have a quiet car for a DD.  That might work for me too...hmmmm...

hrrmm,  i think you could just tune it with the cutout open... and max boost...

it should still run fine with the normal exhuast connected with the cut out closed and the lower boost..  as long as you tune the off WOT driveablitly i doubt you would have any major issues.

Still new to this SD thing and thought I read that somewhere.
But what you said sounds right too...

+1 on Bretts.  The closed quiet exhuast will take the efficiency down, but as long as you have that area tuned well(part throttle, lower rpm with the cutout open, WOT closed) it will be fine.

Update....Varex muffler installed (by evolution)...
The 3.5 inch muffler installed onto my 3 inch exhaust..
You have to hear it in person to believe it.
the whole back half of my car is now silent.....
the valve mech is a power window unit (overkill) so I don't expect mechanical issues.
I just hope the muffler does not rust out..

I didn't realize however how much noise came from the engine compartment .
I will work on insulating the firewall and front cockpit from engine operating noise.

this is by far the quietest performance muffler I ever heard.
So much more enjoyable to drive.

how does it drive with the flap closed?  IE quiet.

does it dyno well compared to your other one?

Dyno testing will be done late spring (after cam install etec). internal piping when valve is open measures just under 3.5 inches.
With flap closed the other passage outlet appears to be 2 inch (I didn't measure it) and feeds back into the outlet.
In any case the piping is larger than my 3 inch muffler.

Update!!!
The valve stopped working....
Turned out to be the control module..
I wired it for manual control anyway.

XFORCE , Australia sent me a control module with new remote and all the wiring.
So I have lots of spare parts now.

If my wiring is right the remote should work with the manual control too.

Varex sells a throttle positon activator to open the muffler when you boot it.
But you could just program the AEM or any stand alone to open the muffler whenever you want.
