Laser with 50 trim, methanol. Updated again... 474whp, 417wtq.
« on: February 17, 2009, 11:27:17 pm »
While a 400whp DSM isn't remarkable, this car actually impressed me considering the parts used.

This is Wade's old car and is exactly the way it was before except:  DS-MAP replaced 2G MAS/AFC.  This bumped the power from 266whp to 292whp.  Added a single methanol jet in the throttle body elbow, retuned and the result today was 411whp  ;D

mods include:
DSM bolt on 50 trim
Kinetic exhaust manifold w/ Tial 38
680 injectors
DS-MAP
Comp 101100 cams, no cam gears
built 9:1 short block
1G intake manifold w/ stock t-body
3" turbo back exhaust
unported o2 housing
some kind of FMIC w/ 2.5" piping

Wow, 120hp from just the meth injection eh?  Was that on pump or race gas?  Impressive.

Pump gas on all runs.  To clarify, meth injection + 7 extra psi + 7-8deg more timing = 119whp gain.

Yeah, I assumed you must of upped the boost and timing.  It's still like putting another power adder on.  Do you run any safeties or warning systems on your meth injection?  If you ran out or had some other failure I'm guessing you'd have a pretty quick meltdown.

Knock gauge on the stock boost gauge, and if the methanol isn't spraying it's instantly noticeable.  On a quick test, knock sum shot up to 30 and timing retarded to 1 degree.  I also have an alarm set on the datalogger to go off if knock > 18 counts.

You'll have the same power band when you get methanol injection and cams.  The 50 trim spools very slightly quicker than the 3076 by ~60rpm.

Lowell, did you ever do a back-to-back test with DS-MAP vs the MAF / AFC?  I am curious if you noticed any differences in initial spool?  I hear lots of rumours of gains (and it follows logically), but I've seen next to no proof.

Once I get my 3076R dialed in on my 2.4, I am really curious to see what it will put down with meth.  I think the Supra SMIC will be the flow restriction and perhaps I should pick up a FP4R exhaust cam.

Anyway, great numbers for a stock intake manifold and small cams!

Hard to say on spool up since that`s very temperature sensitive.

One thing I can say for sure, is that ACT rates the 2100 clutch at 322ft lbs, so when you make 360ft lbs at the wheels, clutch goes bye bye  >:(

Re: Laser with 50 trim, methanol = 411whp. Now 421whp/396tq
« Reply #14 on: March 02, 2009, 07:33:25 pm »
Upgraded to an AEM 3.5 bar map sensor, 10% more methanol and put down 421whp/386tq this morning.  I've always wanted to do a cast vs. tubular manifold test, so without unstrapping the car I switched out the Kinetic manifold for a DNP header.  Spool up was 80 rpm quicker with a 10ft/lb gain on the midrange but top end power was exactly the same at 421, indicating something else is bottle necking the system.  Stock unported O2 housing perhaps?

I should have the graphs up tomorrow.
