Weird Lopping Sound from Timing Area
« on: April 14, 2011, 01:17:28 pm »
Ok.

This DSM curse is really starting to bother me.  One problem after another.

I have a weird lopping sound coming from the timing area.  Was wondering if anyone know what it maybe.

Car is in the office parking lot, and I still need to get her home which is maybe 10-15mins away.  Gonna chance it back home...but not gonna take any further risks after that till I can pin point the problem.

Can't make it out in the video - can you take off your upper timing cover? Just a couple screws
It might be the belt rubbing something if it's starting to walk

Wow...

Walk at this milage?!  Although I kinda doubt it.....

Car has 154787 miles on it, and last night I checked and it only ran about 41,000 km since last timing change.

But I may need to get it checked out and have someone with better experience see it in person.  I for sure am not experienced enough to tell what is wrong at this point.  Will for sure take off the timing cover to inspect when I get home.

Make sure your crank pulley (harmonic balancer) isn't separating.

that is odd.  check the ribs on your serpentine belt.  it may be skipping on and off the tracks on a pulley...

Too late.  Engine seized on my way home...i was hoping i can make it back before looking into it.  Wouldn't crank and had to call a tow.

Got back, pulled timing cover everything looks normal.  Battery voltage was normal.

Funny thing was everything seemed fine on its last stretch.  The idle was fine and engine ran fine, but the ticking noise got worse.  So finally she gave in.  Before that the oil pressure light popped on for a quick moment and then dead.

Now its in my parking stall at home.  Don't know where to start......

Thanks Remi.

Any advise and help from anyone is much appreciated at this point.

I really don't know where to start (or how) to diagnose this engine this time.

Don't know if it oil pump seized (oil pressure was normal when i ran the car...), or what.....

Thanks in advance.

If its a Contitech timing belt on there you went way too long leaving it on there (41 000 km's).  I just changed one today on Brandon Daum's talon tonight and i would say it had less then 10 000 km's on it and the teeth were separating off the belt and small pieces of the belt that turned to dust were everywhere.  If you have a contitech belt on there i wouldnt leave it on more then 15- 20 000 km's.

Even a stock OEM belt i would change every 50 000 km's knowing how hard these cars are on belts.

But if the belt still looks fine (sometimes the teeth only strip off one part of the belt and you dont notice it right away)

and you say you have 150 000 miles on the car?  Its never too late or two early for a 7 bolt to crank walk.  I have seen several with crankwalk problems make it over 200 000 kms and then crap out.

Start with getting the lower timing belt cover off and lining up all the timing marks...  It may have skipped and now the valves are hitting the pistons causing it not to turn over.  If you take the lower cover off and still cant move the crank, then remove the tensioner and slip the timing belt off (or just cut it)  Once the belt is off you should be able to turn the crank either one way or the other if it is hitting valves...

Either way sounds like your probably going to be looking for a new engine.  :(

The sound in your video sounded identical to the sound my talon was making a few months back, it was fragments of belts slapping around against the timing cover. I got lucky and the belt never actually snapped or skipped and like Brett said it was a contitech belt with 13,0000 km :P.
