I wish I had advice for ya man ... I'm pretty much in the same boat as you.

Either stand your ground, or back down.  Both have penalties ... you have to figure out which one best benefits you or the situation.

Good luck buddy.

A compression test should be done whenever you think you see:

-Excess crankcase pressure, this shows up as dipstick popping, oil smoke in the exhaust, some other stuff
-Low power
-Signs of headgakset failure, or alot of other things

I dunno, if you had a compression tester it would be good to do it every second month or something, more often during race season.  If you find a problem, or know there's a problem and a compression test didn't find it you should do a leakdown test and find out exactly what the problem is.  Compression tests more or less only show ring failure, or a seriously burnt valve.  Stuff like valve seat failure won't show up in an obvious way in a compression test.

On the comp test note does anybody have a brand/part number for a decent compression tester that fits our heads?  I've got a craftsman one somewhere that doesn't fit... Something like craftsman quality would be great.  Doesn't have to be Snap-On but I don't buy garbage tools either.

not only do those numbers sound kinda low, but they are uneven too.

Just drive it nice, and look for another motor.  When they get down to those lower numbers, it can't be good for too much longer.  Hell, when it gets down too low, it won't even start.  Seen that before.

Oh and maybe put an air filter on there, dust can, over time, wear on the internals.

that pipe does look pretty dang sweet tho :)

Girls need love.    Caress her, whisper sweet lies into her ear.   Fondle her, pamper her.  A massage is a good start.

She'd like her bottom end given the once over.   Then rip her head off.      Then replace the HG.

And while you're at it, bore her out and stroke her.

Do a leakdown test to see where you're losing compression.  If you're lucky, it will be burned/worn valves and you can just rebuild the cylinder head.

Leakdown test eh.. yeah.. did that :(

Went to princess auto today and built a leakdown tester.  hooked her up and whatta ya know.....   its just pi$$in' compression out into the crank case.

All I need is 6 more months outta her then it's the highway.  I got a 4G64 with a 1g head lined up for her.

You'll also be happy to know, I now have a nice piece of screen covering that pipe :)      If I could find some free time, a welder and a drill press then I'd treat my baby to a real air filter.

PS.

Dan, Your post was great befor you edited it.  Maybe you didnt get that I was talking aobut my car, but that msn article was still perfectly relivent.

As for the compression gauge...   WALMART!!!.   I paid $15 and it fits.  It seems to be decently reliable and gives repeatable results.    Lordo has the exact same one for almost $50.
