GM MAF translator hookup
« on: May 15, 2010, 02:27:47 pm »
Howdy all

I got a "MAF translator - Horsepower in a box", but have an extra plug that I cannot find the connection for. there are three connectors for box, 2 were no problem.

Mine is a 1990 Talon, so maybe there is a slight difference in hookup?

here is pic of mystery plug (stock DSM connector/colors)

3 connectors? im pretty sure if i remember correctly there should only be 2? ... a square kind of plug that plugs into the stock 1g maf sensor harness, which leads to the maf translator, then a plug that goes to your new GM MAF. ? anyone correct me if im wrong?

like this:

1990 Mitsubishi Delica - my daily

Correct, that is called blow through (after the bov), if its pre turbo its draw through.

You can vent in a blow through setup.

the GM mas was NOT meant for blow through... it was meant to be run in draw through... the MAFT was also designed to run draw through (like your stock MAS)..

When you put in in a charge pipe after your BOV it can cause some issues and not run properly.  I would personally run it where the stock MAS was located and re-circulate your BOV... thats how i run my purple colt and it works pretty darn good.  Not as smmooootthh throttle transisions as the stock MAS tho.

it will work the way you have it... you might just have to fool with the knobs to get it to run right...

it was just "designed" to run in the stock MAS location... not saying it cant be done the other way tho.

just wanted to thank everyone for the feedback.  :)

I am hoping to flash it up today. I do have all the original stock intake piping, so if for some reason the MAFT flames out, I can still revert.

I have cut about 3 ft from the intake piping, so I wonder how that will work for throttle response? Not that I was complaining before...

your throttle response will be way better.  On Carmens XR, when I went from no intercooler and literally less than a foot of piping, the throttle response was almost as good as on my Mazdaspeed with 9.5:1 compression, variable cam timing, variable intake runners and a wee small turbo.  Now its gross.  Seriously, its nearly as bad as on my Talon with a big FMIC and a 57trim Garrett.

Just make sure you turn the knobs inside the box according to the manual before you flash / tune or anything

brand new it comes with all settings turned to 0 and that doesn't do anything for a 4G63....

thanks patrick

i found a manual on-line, and i tried to get the car to start, but had no luck; I set base to be stock (0), and fiddled with idle, but it wouldn't start.

For now I had the stock mas plugged in, and can drive the car. Will tinker when I have a bit more time.

ciao
