New turbo thoughts
« on: June 14, 2012, 11:59:48 pm »
in the next few months i'll likely be retiring my e316

based on my current mods and fact that i'm running a stock 7bolt bottom, i'm kinda leaning towards a BEP housing 7 blade hx35,

with the bep housing my spool would only be a little slower, and from what i've researched i think it would work fairly well, i'm not looking to make huge power.. as a daily driver this seems like a decent way to go. (price and reasonable ease of installation etc)..

How much hp and response are you looking for?

The Holset is good bang for the buck depending on any added fabrication costs to make it fit vs say a fp green or hta86 etc.

Daniel, any idea of what kind of power you are making and at what psi, etc?

The Holset is more of a cheap upgrade from what I understand.
Considering you usually buy the best stuff I would get a bb turbo of some sort.
Figure out what your HP goals are and get a turbo that will give you slightly more air then what you need to meet your goal.

I'm considering an HTA68, they seem like a great turbo, quick spool with still decent top end power.  Although the price has gone up quite a bit lately.

That mean you're coming back soon? :D

68 HTA is a hell of a nice turbo and it would be a simple bolt on affair if you are running an Evo 16g.

If you are looking to spend more and change things up I would agree with Rob, get something dual ball bearing and with a modern higher tech compressor cover etc.  HTA or something like that.

If not, just get a good, well known 50 trim in either ball bearing or cheaper journal bearing.  Proven winner right there.

Tho, if you go too big, you are going to HATE the throttle response.  Even the 50 trim (at least journal bearing) cars I have driven are laggy compared to a good 68hta or e16g or bb t28 etc.

Its a big noticable difference, and if you are not going for medium to big power, don't run a turbo for that.  Run just as big as you need for your goals, with maybe 10% for error.

I recently was driving my Talon, and yea it flat out flies once 4k comes up, and the power curve is fat because of a high redline, but at normal traffic rpm, its only ok at best.  I am used to my Mazdaspeed on the hiway, and I was using the Talon to drive somewhere.  Boy, I was surprized at how slow it feels in 5th at regular traffic speeds.  Just squeeze the throttle on the Mazda and you are doing 140-150 in just a few seconds, whereas if you don't drop to 4th in the Talon, you may as well be driving a Camry or something.

Another good turbo to look at is the borg warner s256. From what Yan was telling me it spooled faster than an hta68 and made more power. I think lowell has that car now.

Yan was wringing that little 68's neck but it did make some good power with hella spool.  I think he had 3000kms when he sent it for a rebuild though.   The only negative was some surge in third gear, otherwise excellent response and good power at "reasonable" boost levels.

Kevin, it seems like a small step up from the evo3, and the price isn't exactly cheap either.  Pick your target boost level and cfm and go for a bb turbo, preferably with some new compressor wheel magic.  :)
