help...ECU upgrades & Datalogging
« on: April 10, 2005, 08:40:57 am »
ok, VFAQ, TMO Datalogging 101, Mach V have done its job, i've been reading alot about upgrading your factory ecu and datalogging. now it's your turn to give me some info and advice...i'm on a budget here so i'm gonna steer away from a complete stand-alone...this leaves me with a piggyback ride...any suggestions?
as for datalogging...DSMLink or MachV ECU+ package?
do i need to get my stock ECU reprogrammed/socketed in order to go along with all these?

i am a newbie when it comes to these kinda stuff so you guys are free to leave any suggestions or links that can help me.

Jess, I know you say that a Standalone is out of your budget, but take a look at the total costs involved with getting DSMLink, a logger, an SAFC, and all that.  IF you add it all up, you'll probably end up just shy of where you'd be in getting a Standalone.  Add on to that, the quality you'll get from a standalone is way better than you'll get from any SAFC...

Assuming you have EPROM ECU already, you'll need to get it Socketed inorder to use DSM link or other EPROMs.

DSMLink and other EPROM chips contain the code, so no actuall ECU programming required or can be physically done for that matter.

In any event, purchasing EPROM ECU from 1995 DSM would be a first step for you.

Why would you get a DSMLink and an SAFC?  You only need redundant systems in aerospace

But you are correct about your actual point.  I priced it out and after selling all of my stuff that a stand alone would replace, I would end up needing to pay something small like $300.  *sigh* :(

The price for an EMS is less if you source it locally.  Lowell prices like a fucking MANIAC.

if you are on a cheap beer budget, get a used SAFC, datalogger cable and palm.  Probably around $300.  Software is free.

For a bit more, a MAFT setup and datalogger/cable/Palm.  Or if you have a laptop already, scratch the Palm. But budget $200 US for the MAFT and about $50 for the GM MAF, used. With logger stuff, still under $400.

If you have a more moderate budget, but still have constraints, get DSMLink and an Eprom ECU. Probably just over $1000. Still very easy to use and you get much more than the first two options.

If you have lots of money(but by your post you don't) get an EMS or other standalone.  Great stuff. More money of course, but probably best. You will also need some time to learn it.  And you might have to pay for some of that time, possibly?

 '

I almost feel like abandoning my AWD project, selling all my possesions, and and buying that, then saving up again for the AWD swap. That's the lowest I've seen.
