clutch pedal adjustment query

after some funny business with my clutch i was curious if the pedal just needed to be adjusted, in the haynes manual it says to measure from the floor to the top of the pedal. the desired height in the book said 7 inches, mine was something like 5.5. i measures my friends and his was the same, did haynes screw up or did i? i haven't touched it in fear of screwing it up. the pedal is in line with the brake pedal which sorta leads me to believe that its fine. although my other buddy seems to think it doesn't feel right.
